There’s something about November that makes me want to spend a little more time at home. The days grow shorter, the evenings feel quieter, and suddenly, lighting a candle, making something warm for dinner, and settling in with a favorite movie sound like the loveliest plans.
This November feels especially meaningful for our family because we’re settling into our new home in Minnesota. After a season of big changes, I’m looking forward to the simple things: making dinner in our new kitchen, curling up on the couch, and creating little traditions that make our house feel like home.
And I think that’s what I love most about this time of year. You don’t need an elaborate outing or a perfectly planned evening to make a memory. Sometimes, all it takes is a delicious dinner, a little change in your usual routine, and time together.
So, I planned five cozy November nights at home, complete with something to make, something to do, and a few little details to make each evening feel special. Whether you’re spending the evening with your family, your significant other, or simply enjoying a little time to yourself, I hope these ideas make November feel extra lovely.
1. A Soup & Sourdough Night
There’s something so comforting about a pot of soup simmering on the stove, especially on a chilly November evening.
For this night, make a batch of creamy tomato soup and warm a loaf of sourdough bread in the oven. I love the idea of using Nora Cooks’ Easy Vegan Tomato Soup. It’s made with simple ingredients and gets its creamy texture from cashews, without any dairy.
And if you’re short on time, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with picking up your favorite prepared soup. The point isn’t to spend hours cooking. It’s to make an ordinary dinner feel a little more special.
Set the table with cloth napkins, light a couple of candles, and put on a little jazz while you eat. If you have fresh herbs, add a sprinkle of basil to each bowl.
After dinner, tidy up the kitchen and settle in with a good book or your favorite show.
A few little things to make it special:
- Serve the soup in your favorite bowls, with warm sourdough for dipping.
- Set out butter or olive oil with herbs for the bread.
- Light candles at the dinner table, even if it’s just a regular weeknight.
- Put your phones away and enjoy a slower evening.
It’s such a simple plan, but I think those are often the very best ones.
2. An Apple Crisp & Movie Night
If there’s one thing that makes a home smell like fall, it’s apples baking with cinnamon.
Start the evening by making an easy apple crisp. Nora Cooks’ Vegan Apple Crisp has tender cinnamon-spiced apples and a golden oat topping. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you have the perfect cozy dessert.
Then pull your favorite blankets onto the couch, dim the lights, and choose a cozy movie. You’ve Got Mail is always such a lovely choice for this time of year, but a favorite family movie works just as well.
A few little things to make it special:
- Make the apple crisp together, letting little ones help sprinkle the topping.
- Bring extra pillows and blankets into the living room.
- Turn on the lamps instead of the overhead lights.
- Make warm apple cider or another favorite drink to enjoy with dessert.
You could even make this a November tradition and let everyone take turns choosing the movie each year.
3. A Pizza & Board Game Night
This is one of those evenings that’s easy to plan and fun for just about everyone.
Pick up pizza dough, your favorite sauce, shredded cheese or a dairy-free alternative, and a few toppings. Set everything out on the counter and let everyone create their own pizza.
If you’d rather make your dough from scratch, Nora Cooks’ Vegan Pizza includes a homemade pizza dough recipe that’s ready in under an hour, along with plenty of topping inspiration.
I love the idea of making smaller, individual pizzas so everyone gets to choose exactly what they want.
While the pizzas bake, set the table and put on a favorite playlist.
After dinner, clean up the kitchen, bring out a board game, and settle in for a little friendly competition. Uno, a favorite card game, or a puzzle would all be perfect.
A few little things to make it special:
- Give everyone their own little piece of pizza dough to decorate.
- Set the toppings out in small bowls so dinner feels like an activity.
- Choose a game that everyone can enjoy.
- Put phones away for the evening and let yourselves be fully present.
And if you have little ones who aren’t quite ready for board games, a simple matching game or puzzle is just as sweet.
4. A Gratitude & Sweet Treats Night
November always feels like a natural time to slow down and notice the things we’re thankful for.
For this evening, bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies, make warm drinks, and gather around the table.
If you need a cookie recipe, Nora Cooks’ Perfect Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies are a lovely option. She also has a Vegan Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe if you’re looking for something gluten-free.
While the cookies are baking, give everyone a few small pieces of paper and ask them to write or draw three things they’re thankful for.
They don’t need to be big things. A favorite stuffed animal, a visit with grandparents, a warm home, or a really good day together all count.
Fold the notes and tuck them into a jar. On Thanksgiving, take a few minutes to read them together.
A few little things to make it special:
- Make hot chocolate, tea, or warm apple cider.
- Let younger children draw pictures instead of writing.
- Decorate your gratitude jar with a little ribbon or handwritten label.
- Save the gratitude notes to revisit next year.
I especially love traditions like this because they’re simple enough to repeat year after year, and they become more meaningful with time.
5. A Living Room Campout
I think this might be the most fun idea of the five, especially if you have little ones at home.
Turn your living room into a little campsite for the evening!
Gather couch cushions, blankets, pillows, and a few battery-operated twinkle lights to make a cozy fort. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Even a blanket draped over a couple of chairs can feel magical.
For dinner, make breakfast! Pancakes, berries, and your favorite breakfast sides make the evening feel a little unexpected.
Nora Cooks’ Sheet Pan Pancakes would be especially fun for this night. You can bake the pancakes together on one pan and customize different sections with your family’s favorite toppings.
Afterward, bring a stack of books into your fort and read stories by flashlight. You could even make up a few stories of your own.
A few little things to make it special:
- Let everyone bring their favorite blanket or stuffed animal.
- Serve breakfast for dinner on a picnic blanket.
- Use battery-operated lights for a soft, cozy glow.
- Read a favorite bedtime story somewhere other than the bedroom.
And the best part? You can enjoy the whole experience without packing a single bag or leaving the house.
A Little Reminder for November
I think it’s easy to feel like we need to fill our calendars with outings, activities, and special events to make a season memorable. But some of my favorite memories are the simplest ones: A homemade dinner. A favorite movie. A little tradition that starts on an ordinary Tuesday and becomes something everyone looks forward to.
As our family settles into our Minnesota home this November, those are the moments I’m most excited to create. I hope these five cozy nights inspire you to make a little extra room for togetherness this month, too. And remember, you don’t have to do all five! Choose the one that sounds most lovely to you, pick a night on the calendar, and enjoy it. Here’s to a November filled with warm homes, sweet traditions, and all the little things that make everyday life lovely. 🌼
