There is something about this particular stretch of the year — winter wrapping up, spring just starting to show itself — that makes a week feel full in the best possible way. This one had a milestone moment, a lot of family time, a very important first ice cream experience, and a few quiet couch hours at the end to balance it all out. Here is everything from our week.
I Appeared on Twin Cities Live
The highlight of the week — at least the one I keep coming back to — was my segment on Twin Cities Live. It aired live during Staycation Week, and I got to talk about making your home feel like a luxurious getaway without going anywhere. I have been blogging for 13 years, and this was one of those milestone moments that felt genuinely surreal. Ben and Ollie were there, which made it even sweeter. (I shared the full story here earlier this week.)
We Had Tons of Family Time
We had a really full, really good week of family time — the kind where you find yourself at the dinner table and realize everyone is happy and laughing and you want to hold onto the moment forever. We had a few of those this week, especially since Ollie’s been requesting we do every small thing “as a family.” One early evening, before our bedtime routine, Ollie insisted on giving every person shown on the back of a fitness magazine a name… names like Phil, Perla, and Fahrenheit. Ben and I were cackling, and Ollie was so pleased with her ability to make us laugh so hard.
The highlight of all highlights: Ollie tried ice cream for the very first time. Best of all, the flavor was “birthday cake with sprinkles.” She has not stopped talking about it since, and now when we talk about going to Disney World soon, she talks about having ice cream at Disney World too. I can’t blame her; ice cream is the best!
Ollie’s Birthday Party Invitations Are in the Mail
We sent out Ollie’s birthday party invitations this week! We always try to do this early, because we know summer calendars can fill up quickly. There is something so happy about dropping those in the mail, and it gets me all the more excited to continue planning. Her birthday is going to be so sweet this year. She chose a rainbow theme, which will be so magical to bring to life. (I’ve already purchased these, since they’re such a practical and cost-effective alternative to balloons and balloon garlands!)
Our Disney Countdown is On
The excitement in our house for our Disney trip is at an all-time high. Every day, upon waking up, Ollie says, “It’s time to take off a ring!” in reference to the paper chain we made a few weeks ago. Ollie gets a little more lit up with excitement with each passing day; she is so ready to meet Mickey Mouse. I shared all the details of how we are planning our Disney trip with a toddler here, if you want to read through our full approach. (Our complete packing list is coming soon!)
Business Goals for the Year Ahead
My business partner and I sat down together this week to set goals for the rest of the year. I always leave those meetings feeling energized and clear-headed. We have some really exciting projects in progress right now and I cannot wait to share more as things come together.
Spring Cleaning with Breathing Room: 30 Spaces in 30 Days
This spring, I am doing something on Instagram that I have been wanting to do for a while. It is called Breathing Room: 30 Spaces in 30 Days — a decluttering series where I tackle one space each day for 30 days and share the whole process in real time. Closets, drawers, cabinets, corners — all of it. If you have been wanting to do a real spring reset but are not sure where to start, come along. I think there is something about doing it together that makes it feel so much more manageable. You can follow along over at @kellyzugay. (The start date is TBD!)
One thing I have learned through years of refreshing and organizing spaces: the right basket or bin makes all the difference. Not just for the look of a space, but for whether the organization actually sticks. My current favorites are from the Threshold x Studio McGee line at Target — the woven seagrass and rattan pieces in particular are so beautiful and so practical. I will link my favorites in my Instagram stories as we go through the series.
Projects Happening Around the House
We have a few home projects in progress right now and I love having things to look forward to on that front.
The laundry room refresh is almost done. Though it’s a small-scale project, it has been slow-moving… but it is coming together, and I am so happy with how it is turning out. I will share the full before and after here on the blog once it is complete.
We are also planning Ollie’s big girl room. She is getting her big girl bed soon, and we are going to redecorate her whole room around it. I have so many ideas and I am so excited to do something really sweet and special for her. More on that very soon!
And finally — new throw pillows for our sofa, which was long overdue. The sofa is new and it needed something to make it feel finished and cozy. I went with 5 pillows from this small business, and I am so happy with how they pulled the room together. A few new pillows really can change a space completely.
And Ending the Week on the Couch
We ended the week all three of us down with a cold. The kind that arrives right after a full, happy stretch and asks you to slow all the way down. Ollie and I spent today curled up on the couch together — her napping on me, both of us a little tired and a little cozy. It is bittersweet in the way that sick days with a toddler always are. But there is also something quietly sweet about being the person she wants close when she does not feel her best. Hopefully after sickness ends (and a record-breaking blizzard passes) we’ll start the week feeling fresh and new.
Wishing you a healthy, gentle weekend ahead. See you back here soon!
