Welcome to Day 27 of 30 Spaces in 30 Days. Three spaces left after today — and this one is among the most satisfying organizational spaces in the entire challenge, because getting it right pays off every single season for years to come. Today, we’re talking about seasonal decorations storage.
The System That Keeps Everything Intentional
Here’s the approach we’ve taken to seasonal decorations that I think is genuinely worth sharing, because it has completely eliminated the two most common seasonal décor problems: accumulating things you no longer love and holding onto things you no longer use.
Every season, when we unpack our decorations, we go through everything as we pull it out. Anything we don’t plan to put out this season — anything that no longer feels right for our home, our taste, or this particular chapter of our life — goes directly into the donate pile before it ever makes it to a shelf or a mantle. It doesn’t go back in the bin. It goes out.
This one habit does two things beautifully. It keeps our collection edited and intentional, which means every piece we put out is something we genuinely love. And it removes the temptation to buy new décor to replace the feeling of something fresh — because the collection is already curated, already current, and already exactly what we want.
The result is a seasonal decorations closet that holds one bin per season and holiday, clearly labeled, with only the pieces that have genuinely earned their place. Opening that closet at the start of each season feels exciting rather than overwhelming, and putting things away at the end feels satisfying rather than like a chore.
What a Well-Organized Seasonal Storage System Looks Like
The most functional seasonal decoration storage tends to share a few things in common. Everything is contained in clearly labeled bins — one per season or holiday — so you can find exactly what you’re looking for without emptying the whole closet. The bins are accessible and stackable, with the current or upcoming season most accessible. And the collection itself is edited — only pieces you genuinely love and plan to use, nothing more.
Labels are worth doing properly. Not just “Christmas” but specific enough that you know exactly what’s inside — “Christmas mantle,” “Christmas tabletop,” “fall entry,” “spring florals.” The more specific the label, the more useful the system.
How to Declutter Your Seasonal Decorations Storage Today
Give yourself 30 to 45 minutes for this one and approach it with the same honest intention we’ve brought to every space in this challenge.
Step 1: Open every bin and take stock. Before you edit anything, get a clear picture of what you actually have across all seasons and holidays. Most people are surprised by how much they’ve accumulated — and how much of it they’ve stopped loving without ever consciously deciding to.
Step 2: Edit as you go. For each piece in each bin, ask honestly: will I put this out this season? Does it still feel like us? Does it still fit the home we’re building? If the answer is no — even a hesitant no — it goes. Seasonal décor that you put out out of obligation rather than genuine love isn’t adding anything to your home.
Step 3: Donate before it goes back in the bin. This is the key step that makes the system work. Anything leaving the collection goes directly into the donate pile — not back in the bin for another year of consideration. Making the decision once and acting on it immediately is what keeps the collection permanently edited rather than gradually expanding again.
Step 4: Reorganize what stays with intention. Once you’ve edited, reorganize what remains by season and holiday in clearly labeled bins. Stack with the current or upcoming season most accessible. Give every bin a consistent home on the shelf so you always know exactly where to look.
Step 5: Commit to the seasonal edit ritual. The habit of editing as you unpack — every single season — is what makes this system maintain itself permanently. You never need a big declutter of your seasonal storage again because the declutter happens naturally every time you decorate.
A Collection That Stays Joyful
There’s something really lovely about a seasonal decoration collection that’s been kept genuinely current — where every piece that comes out of the bin is something you’re excited to put out, where nothing feels like a leftover from a previous version of your home, and where the whole act of decorating for a new season feels like a genuine celebration rather than a chore. That’s what today is about. A collection that stays joyful because it’s always being tended to.
