How I’m Refreshing Our Home for Spring (Without Buying Everything New)

Every year around this time, I get the itch. The light starts to shift, the days feel a little longer, and suddenly every room in our home feels like it needs to breathe. I don’t want to totally redecorate, I’m not looking to spend a lot… I just want our home to feel like the season we’re actually in — lighter, fresher, and a little more alive.

The good news is that a spring refresh really doesn’t have to mean anything major. Some of the changes I love most are the smallest ones. Here’s what I’ve been doing around our home lately, and a few things I’m so glad I found.

Start With a Good Clear-Out

Before anything else, I declutter. Winter has a way of accumulating — heavier pieces, extra layers, things that drifted in and never quite found a home. I go room by room and ask what actually belongs in this space right now, and what can be tucked away until fall.

There’s something about clearing things out that makes a room feel refreshed before you’ve added a single thing. It’s also my cue to do a deeper clean — baseboards, shelves, corners. Our whole home just feels newer afterward.

Swap Out Your Textiles

This is my favorite thing to do and honestly one of the most impactful changes you can make. I pull out the heavier winter pillows and blankets and swap them for something lighter, softer, and more spring-appropriate. It’s such a simple thing and it makes a room feel completely different.

This year I picked up this Woven Floral Throw from Target and I am so in love with it. It has beautiful texture, a delicate floral and leaf pattern, and that fringe detail that makes it feel elevated without being fussy. It layers so nicely over the couch and just makes everything feel warmer and more intentional. I also picked up this throw pillow, and it just has such a cheerful feel.

If you have throw pillow covers or lighter blankets tucked away from a previous season, now is a perfect time to bring them out. You might not need to buy anything at all.

Bring In Something Living

Nothing signals spring to me quite like fresh flowers. With Ben, Ollie, and I pick them up from our local grocery store every week this time of year. They make our space feel fresh, and they genuinely make me happy every single time I walk past them.

There’s something about a simple bunch of flowers on a kitchen counter or a dining table that just changes the whole energy of a home. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to be there.

Change Your Candle

I believe your home should smell like the season it’s in. For spring I want something light and fresh — something that smells like open windows and sunshine. A new candle is one of the smallest, most affordable ways to make your home feel like a completely different season. If you’re still burning your January candle, consider this your gentle nudge.

The Overall Feeling I’m Going For

More than any specific purchase, what I want our home to feel like in spring is light and like it took a deep breath after a long winter. These small changes — a fresh textile, some flowers from the grocery store, a new candle, a good clear-out — add up to exactly that. You don’t need to overhaul anything; you just need to let a little spring in.
