How to Declutter Your Nightstand: Day 2 of 30 Spaces in 30 Days

Welcome to Day 2 of 30 Spaces in 30 Days. If you tackled your kitchen counters yesterday — I hope you walked into your kitchen this morning and felt exactly what I said you would. That exhale is real, and it’s only the beginning.

Today we’re moving into the bedroom. Specifically, the nightstand.

This one is close to my heart, because I think the nightstand is one of the most underestimated surfaces in the entire home. It’s the first thing you see when you open your eyes in the morning and the last thing you see before you close them at night. It bookends every single day. And yet most of us treat it like a landing pad — a place where things accumulate without intention, without purpose, and without any real thought about what we actually want to see in those quiet, bookend moments.

Today, we’re changing that!

Why Your Nightstand Matters More Than You Think

Think about the last thing you saw before you fell asleep last night. And the first thing you saw this morning when you woke up. For most people, it’s a small pile of accumulated life — a half-read book buried under a charging cable, a glass of water, maybe a few things that genuinely have no business being in the bedroom at all.

None of that is wrong. But here’s what’s worth considering: the things that surround you in those quiet, bookend moments of the day have a real and measurable effect on how you feel. A cluttered nightstand can create a low-level sense of unease before you’ve even gotten out of bed. A clear, intentional one can make you feel calm, grounded, and genuinely ready for the day ahead — before you’ve done a single thing.

Your nightstand isn’t just a surface. It’s a small but powerful reflection of how you’re caring for yourself at the beginning and end of each day. And that’s worth paying attention to.

What Actually Belongs on a Nightstand

This is a deeply personal question, and I want to honor that. What belongs on your nightstand is whatever genuinely serves you in those quiet morning and evening moments — and nothing else.

For most people, that list includes something to read, something for skincare or hand care, a glass of water, and perhaps a lamp and something small and beautiful that makes the space feel like yours. A candle, a small plant, a meaningful object. Something that makes you feel good when you see it.

What doesn’t belong on a nightstand — and this is where most of us can be more honest — is anything that creates mental noise. Anything work-related. Anything that belongs in another room. Anything you set down once and forgot about. The nightstand is a sanctuary space, and it deserves to be treated like one.

How to Declutter Your Nightstand Today

This one is quick — give yourself 15 minutes and move through it with intention.

Step 1: Clear everything off. Every single thing. Just like the countertops yesterday, starting from a blank surface forces you to make a real decision about each item rather than working around what’s already there.

Step 2: Clean the surface. Wipe it down completely. Dust the lamp, the base, everything. This small act of care makes a meaningful difference in how the finished result feels.

Step 3: Think about your morning and evening routines. Before you put anything back, ask yourself — what do I actually reach for in the morning? What do I genuinely need within arm’s reach at night? Let your real routines, not your aspirational ones, guide what goes back.

Step 4: Return only what serves those routines. Put back what genuinely belongs, and give each item a specific, consistent spot. A book goes here. Hand cream goes here. Water glass goes here. When everything has a designated home, the nightstand stays clear naturally.

Step 5: Add one thing that makes you feel cared for. A beautiful candle, a small vase with a single stem, a crystal, a photograph — something that makes that last visual of the day feel genuinely lovely. You deserve to close your eyes on something beautiful.

Step 6: Relocate everything else. Anything that doesn’t belong in those bookend moments gets a home somewhere else — another drawer, another room, the donate pile. Be honest with yourself here. A clear nightstand is one of the kindest things you can do for your sleep, your mornings, and your overall sense of calm at home.

What You’ll Notice Tonight

Tonight, when you get into bed and glance at your nightstand, I want you to notice how it feels. The quiet of it. The sense that this small corner of your home is taking care of you rather than adding to your mental load.

That feeling is exactly what we’re building, one space at a time.

See you tomorrow for Day 3 — and if you’ve been waiting to jump in, tomorrow is a good one. We’re tackling the junk drawer!
