Welcome to Day 14, and welcome to the end of Week 2 of 30 Spaces in 30 Days. Two full weeks of intentional spaces, one at a time, together. Before we dive into today’s space, I want to share what’s coming in Week 3 — because I think having the full picture makes it easier to keep going and something to look forward to each day:

Week 3 — Days 15–21:

  • Day 15 — Freezer
  • Day 16 — Kitchen Cabinets
  • Day 17 — Kitchen Drawers
  • Day 18 — Bathroom Vanity
  • Day 19 — Bedroom Closet
  • Day 20 — Kids’ Toy Storage
  • Day 21 — The Car

Now — today. The refrigerator.

The Most Opened Storage Space in Your Home

Here’s something worth thinking about: your refrigerator is probably the most opened storage space in your entire home. You open it multiple times a day, every single day — for meals, for snacks, for a glass of water, for a quick check of what’s in there. Every single time you do, you see everything inside it.

When it’s cluttered and disorganized, that moment — repeated many times a day — carries a low-level friction that most of us have simply gotten used to absorbing. You open the door, can’t immediately find what you’re looking for, move things around, close it again. It’s a small thing. But multiplied across every day of the week, it adds up to a lot of unnecessary effort and a lot of wasted time.

A decluttered refrigerator removes all of that friction. When everything has a place, when you can see what you have at a glance, and when opening the door actually shows you what’s in there — your day runs more smoothly, your groceries get used before they expire, and the whole experience of feeding your family feels genuinely easier.

The Sauce and Salsa Situation

I want to address something very specific and very real in our household: Ben and I are known to overload on sauces and salsas. Condiments accumulate in our refrigerator door with a kind of persistence that I have come to accept as a personality trait. By the time we notice, there are several sauces we bought for a specific recipe and never finished, and a general door situation that has gotten away from us.

If this sounds familiar (and I suspect it might) today is a really good day to do an honest condiment audit. Check the dates, consolidate where you can, and let go of anything that’s been open long enough that you genuinely cannot remember when you opened it. The door of your refrigerator will thank you immediately.

What a Well-Decluttered Refrigerator Actually Looks Like

The most functional refrigerators tend to share a few things in common. Everything in them is current and visible. Similar items are grouped together so you always know where to look. The things you reach for most often are most accessible. And there’s enough breathing room between items that you can actually see what’s there without moving six things to find one.

Clear bins are one of the most effective tools for refrigerator organization — they keep categories contained, make it easy to pull out a whole group of things at once, and ensure that nothing gets lost at the back of a shelf. We use them in ours and they genuinely make a difference in how organized the refrigerator stays between cleanouts.

How to Declutter Your Refrigerator Today

Give yourself 30 minutes for this one. It goes quickly and the result is immediately and visibly satisfying.

Step 1: Take everything out. Every single item — from every shelf, every drawer, every door compartment. Lay it all out on your counter so you can see exactly what you have and make honest decisions about all of it.

Step 2: Clean the refrigerator completely. Before anything goes back in, wipe down every shelf, every drawer, every door compartment. Remove the drawers if you can and wash them properly. A sparkling clean refrigerator is one of the most satisfying things in this entire challenge — take the time to do it properly.

Step 3: Check every expiration date. Go through everything and check the date. Anything expired goes — no exceptions. For open condiments and sauces without a clear expiration date, use your best judgment. If it’s been open for more than a month or two and you’re not sure when you opened it, let it go.

Step 4: Do the condiment audit. Pull out every sauce, every condiment, every jar of salsa and dressing and spread. Check dates, consolidate where you can — if you have two open jars of the same salsa, combine them into one — and let go of anything that’s past its prime or that you genuinely haven’t reached for in months. This one step alone frees up more refrigerator real estate than almost anything else.

Step 5: Sort what’s staying into categories. Before anything goes back in, group like with like — dairy together, leftovers together, drinks together, produce together, condiments together. Sorting first means putting things back with intention rather than just filling shelves.

Step 6: Return everything with intention. Put each category back in a designated spot and keep your most-reached-for items most accessible. If you have clear bins, use them to keep categories contained and easy to pull out. Give everything a consistent home so it always goes back to the same place.

Step 7: Make a grocery list of anything running low. A refrigerator declutter is a genuinely great opportunity to take stock of what you have and what you need. Before you close the door, make a note of anything that needs replenishing and add it to your grocery list.

Two Weeks Down

Today marks the end of Week 2: fourteen spaces in fourteen days is something genuinely worth celebrating. Your home is lighter, more intentional, and more functional than it was two weeks ago. And we’re only halfway through!

Week 3 starts tomorrow with the freezer, and it only gets better from here. See you tomorrow for Day 15! 🌼
